Organically grown foods are still your best bet to avoid contaminants in your food and optimize your nutrient intake. But what about weight loss?

Are organically grown foods better not only for nutrition but also for losing or controlling weight?

While there are no research studies comparing weight loss in a diet of organic foods versus weight loss while consuming non-organic foods, there are parts and tests in two areas that have convinced me that it is important to pay more attention to the benefits of Organic when you want to lose weight in a healthy way. 

The first evidence area involves contaminants from the food. During the periods in which we are trying to lose weight, some health risks that would not normally be annoying may end up representing a significant risk.

The risk of toxicity of environmental contaminants and contaminants in food is included in this category. Research studies have shown that levels of toxins in the blood and tissues can increase during periods of weight loss. In addition, the normal metabolic patterns used to detoxify contaminants can be challenged during these periods of time. 

The strict rules that apply to the production of organic foods drastically reduce the levels of contaminants in food, including pesticides, solvents and heavy metals. These substances can be especially risky when we follow a diet to lose weight. During weight loss, we borrow more heavily in our body's nutrient reserves. We use fat in our fat cells for energy that is one of the main ways in which we lose weight (and body fat). But we can also move more minerals in and out of our bones, or more amino acids in and out of our muscles. Although our body may be reducing in size and weight during weight loss, the burden on our metabolism can increase considerably. If we have stored heavy metals (such as lead) in our bones, or fat-soluble toxins (such as solvents and some pesticides) in our fat cells, these toxins can be released from their storage sites during weight loss. Our liver and kidneys will be called to respond to this challenge with more active detoxification, and that challenge, in turn, will require more energy and more nutrients. 

Weight loss is a period of time when we need to make the most of the least. Weight loss means that we are giving ourselves less food, but at the same time, we ask our body to make more metabolism. From a nutritional point of view, we attach special importance to the foods that we choose to eat. In fact, this reduced amount of food has to achieve more from a nutritional and metabolic point of view. Once again, organic foods are the ticket to success when it comes to getting the most nutrients from the least amount of food. 

From the point of view of research, there is still a debate about the nutritional differences between organic and non-organic foods. 

While a research comparison between organic and non-organic foods seems a fairly simple proposition, nutritional differences of this type are not always so easy to determine. However, given all the research studies we have seen in the last 20 years of research, we believe that the general evidence clearly shows a better composition of nutrients in organic vs. non-organic foods. On average, we believe that this difference falls in the range of 10 to 20% more nutrients available in organically grown foods. We can get more nutrients from the calories we spend, or even reduce our food without losing nutrients. That is critical at a time when we are challenging the metabolism of our body. 

Although you can emphasize more fresh fruits and vegetables during a period of weight loss, remember that the benefits of organic products are not limited to these food groups. Nuts, seeds, olive oil, legumes, whole grains, lean meats and low-fat dairy products will improve the health of your weight loss if they have been organically grown/raised.
